Consuming too much fatty food and obesity can worsen the chances of curing breast cancer, say Chinese scientists in a study published in the US Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

High fat diet is a high-risk factor for malignant progression of cancer through intestinal microbiota disruptionaccording to scientists who said that it is“Intestinal microbiota associated with obesity is also associated with a worse prognosis in patients with breast cancer.

The team, led by doctors and scientists from Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, warned that obesity would could contribute to the acceleration of tumor progression or reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy, which ultimately leads to a worse prognosis.

Tests and analyzes have shown that gut microbiota associated with a high-fat diet cause the body to produce too much of the amino acid leucine, a process they say promotes accelerated progression and worsening of breast cancer and melanoma outcomes.

At the same time, however, the tests suggest a gut-bone-marrow-tumor connection that could in turn show broad avenue for therapeutic strategies against cancer based on gut targeting.

Other studies have pointed to excess weight as a cause of cancer, according to the University of Texas.

The number of people worldwide classified as obese doubled to nearly 900 million between 1990 and 2022, according to data compiled by the World Health Organization, which also estimates that about 2.5 billion adults worldwide are overweight.
