Mexico City: It is impossible to predict who wins and losses in cricket. There is no better example of this. With just 5 wickets in hand in the last over of the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup qualifying round, Canada need just 3 runs. All five Canadian batsmen were out in the first five balls of the final over as Canada were assured of victory. The result was an incredible one-run victory for the Brazilian women who were assured of losing the match!

After losing the toss and opting to bat, the Brazilian women scored 48 for seven in the allotted 17 overs. Captain Roberta Avery was Brazil’s top scorer with 21 off 32 balls with two fours. No one else in the Brazil line-up even crossed the line twice.

In reply, the Canadian women were 46 for five in 16 overs. Mukhwinder Singh, the team’s top scorer, was at the crease with 18 off 26 balls and Krima Kapadia with nine off 24 balls. With two runs tied and three runs won, Canada suffered an incredible batting collapse.

Krima Kapadia runs out the first ball thrown by Laura Cardoso for Brazil. He returned with nine runs off 24 balls. Hala Azmat, Hiba Shamshad and Sana Zafar, who came next, completed the Cardoso hat-trick with the Golden Duck. Canada’s top scorer Mukhwinder Gill was run out in the fifth over for a second run, giving Brazil an incredible one – run victory. Six of the Canadian line-up were out for zero.
