Ministry of Employment and Labor released last December’s labor market trend
Accommodation and food service industry increased by 800 and 10,000 people, respectively

[세종=뉴스핌] Reporter from Chengso = The number of employment insurance subscribers in the lodging and food industry, where recovery of employment has been slow due to the spread of COVID-19 and the effect of social distancing, has increased for the first time in 20 months. However, the number of subscribers is still below the pre-COVID-19 level, indicating that the difficult situation continues.

According to the ‘Labor Market Trends in December by Employment Administration Statistics’ released by the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 10th, the number of employment insurance subscribers last month was 14,512,000, an increase of 432,000 compared to the same period last year.

By age, the number of subscribers increased in all age groups. In particular, the number of subscribers in their 30s has been increasing for four consecutive months, centering on publication and video communications, specialized science and technology, and health and welfare. This is an increase of 17,000 compared to the same period last year.

By industry, the number of manufacturing subscribers stood at 3,633,000, an increase of 87,000 from the same period last year. The number of subscribers increased in most industries such as electronic communication, food, and electrical equipment, and it has been on the rise for 12 months after turning to an increase in January.

In the service sector, the number of employment insurance subscribers increased by 313,000 to 9979,000.

The number of employees in the lodging and food industry and transportation industry, where the employment cold wave has been going on for nearly a year due to the impact of COVID-19, has turned to increase for the first time in 20 and 19 months, respectively. As quarantine rules are eased, the situation in the service industry is improving, such as domestic travel increasing, and it is believed to be affected by the base effect of last year’s employment cold wave.

However, the number of subscribers was found to be less than the pre-COVID level. The number of employment insurance subscribers in the lodging and catering industries increased by 800 and 10,900, respectively, from the same period last year.

In the case of the transportation industry, parcel delivery and freight cars increased, but the number of employment insurance subscribers in the land transportation industry, mainly taxis and intercity buses, continued to decrease. As the number of international passengers decreases, the air transport industry is also showing a declining trend. On the other hand, the large expansion of logistics agency services led to an increase in the number of employment insurance subscribers in the transportation industry.

The public administration sector, where the number of employment insurance subscribers has significantly decreased due to the base effect of last year’s supplementary budget jobs, continues to decline. However, the decrease was mild compared to the previous three months, and the number decreased to 28,000 compared to the same period last year.

The amount of job-seeking benefits that the government pays for re-employment to those who have lost their employment insurance qualifications has been less than 1 trillion won for two consecutive months. Last month, the amount of job-seeking benefits received was 811.4 billion won, a decrease of 15.2% (145.1 billion won) compared to the same period last year.

The amount that can be received when job search benefits are paid was about 1.37 million won, down 1.1% from the same period last year. It is believed to be the result of a combination of the labor market recovery and the base effect last year. The number of people who applied for job search benefits also decreased by 6,000 from the same period last year to 102,000. The number of applicants decreased mainly in lodging and food (3,000 people), construction (2,000 people), and manufacturing (2,000 people).
