A massive winter storm sweeping across the United States led to the cancellation of more than 10,000 flights scheduled for the weekend of January 6-7, 2025, as heavy snow, sleet, and frigid temperatures impacted travel nationwide.
Flight Cancellations Surge
On Saturday, January 6, 2025, over 3,500 flights were canceled, according to data from FlightAware. The hardest-hit airports were Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) with approximately 1,300 cancellations and Dallas Love field (DAL) with 186 cancellations. These cancellations represented a notable portion of each airport’s scheduled flights.
Airline Impacts
American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, canceled 902 flights on Saturday, representing roughly 30% of its mainline schedule. Southwest Airlines also experienced considerable disruptions, canceling 571 flights.
