Apple captured 22 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2026, marking the company’s largest-ever third-quarter market share on record, according to Counterpoint Research. That figure pushed Apple past the 20 percent threshold for the first time in a third quarter, rising from 18 percent in the third quarter of 2025, according to data from Counterpoint Research.

Global Smartphone Shipments Fall 20 Percent in Industry Slump

Worldwide smartphone shipments dropped 20 percent year over year during the third quarter of 2026. Counterpoint Research attributed the steep double-digit decline to memory availability limits and rising component prices.

The drop drove global shipments to their lowest third-quarter level in 14 years. Manufacturers faced a paralyzing memory crisis that squeezed out budget-conscious buyers and forced brands to prioritize profitability over total volume.

iPhone 18 Pro Demand Drives Sales Despite Missing Entry-Level Model

Apple achieved its record share despite handling a lower volume of initial shipments compared to the previous year. The company released no base model for the iPhone 18 lineup, which resulted in lower channel restocking during the launch month than the full iPhone 17 range generated a year earlier.

To offset the volume dip, Apple relied on steady demand for the older iPhone 17 series alongside a stronger debut for the new iPhone 18 Pro models. The top-tier devices generated particularly robust interest in China and India.

Samsung Retains Lead While Competitors Lose Market Share

Samsung held onto its position as the world’s top smartphone vendor with a 23 percent market share, keeping a narrow lead over Apple’s surging numbers. Other major manufacturers faced heavier losses during the period.

  • Xiaomi secured third place with 10 percent of the market.
  • OPPO followed in fourth place with 9 percent of shipments.
  • vivo rounded out the top five with 8 percent.

Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo all saw their respective market shares shrink compared to their results from the third quarter of 2025.

Supply Constraints Delay Industry Recovery

Price-sensitive consumers continue to face pressure from higher device costs and tight component supplies. Market researchers note that these supply constraints will likely delay any meaningful sector recovery until global component availability improves.
