Apple Unveils iPhone Air,Blood Pressure Watch Amid Tariff Concerns
Cupertino,CA – Apple sent ripples through the tech world Tuesday, unveiling a new, slimmer iPhone “Air” model alongside the iPhone 17,the latest iteration of its flagship smartphone. The highly anticipated product launch comes as the company navigates a complex global trade landscape and escalating tariff pressures.
CEO Tim Cook introduced the iPhone Air as a ”game-changer,” highlighting its durable design and innovative “high-density battery.” Priced starting at $999,the iPhone Air is poised to compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, potentially paving the way for Apple to enter the foldable phone market,a key area of consumer interest in China.
The iPhone 17 boasts a brighter, more scratch-resistant screen and a new A19 processor chip built with cutting-edge three-nanometre (3nm) technology. This new chip promises enhanced on-device artificial intelligence capabilities, though meaningful upgrades to Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, are expected to be delayed until next year. The iPhone 17 will also feature an improved front-facing camera designed to optimize horizontal selfies.
Beyond iPhones, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro 3, featuring live language translation capabilities. The new earbuds, priced at $249,will translate conversations in near real-time when both participants are wearing them, becoming available on September 19.
In a move towards proactive health monitoring, Apple also unveiled a blood pressure monitor in its latest Apple Watch. While the feature is pending regulatory approval, Apple anticipates it will notify one million people of potential high blood pressure issues across 150 countries. The new Apple watch SE will cost $249, the series 11 will cost $399, and the larger Ultra model will start at $799.
The launch event arrives amidst a global trade reordering, with Apple estimating tariffs will cost the company over $1 billion this fiscal quarter. Analysts are closely monitoring whether Apple will increase iPhone prices or explore option strategies to offset tariff costs, such as maintaining base model prices while increasing the cost of higher storage options.”This new device will bring a sense of newness to the iPhone, which has remained the same for too long,” said PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore. He added that the “new and much-improved iPhone lineup looks remarkable, which puts [Apple] in a strong position to cater for different segments.”
