Apple silicon version Mac Pro and iMac Pro will be released by June, rumor that migration from Intel CPU is completed –Engadget Japanese version

At the World Developers Conference WWDC in June 2020, Apple promised to move its Mac processor from Intel to its own Apple Silicon over the next two years.

It is reported that by June 2022, various new Macs equipped with Apple silicon will be released, and that promise (replacement of major models with Apple silicon) will be fulfilled.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who is famous for knowing Apple’s internal information well, said in the latest issue of his newsletter “Power On”, before 2022, new Macs equipped with Apple silicon will be released one after another. While reaffirming his expectations, he gives more detailed information.

According to it, Apple is planning “many new professional Macs based on the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in the MacBook Pro (2021).”

The breakdown is the “small Mac Pro with up to 40 CPU cores and 128 graphics cores,” the new Mac mini, and the large-screen iMac Pro.

And Gurman predicts that “the transition from Intel chips to Apple silicon will be complete by WWDC 2022 in June at the earliest.” If the outlook is correct, new Macs are likely to appear one after another in the first half of 2022.

Gourman also confirms that the next MacBook Air, which has undergone “the biggest design change in product history,” and the next entry model MacBook Pro (the successor to the current 13-inch model) are being prepared.

Finally, regarding the “M2 chip,” which is the successor to the M1 chip, Gourman commented that you shouldn’t expect a dramatic improvement in performance. “As far as I can tell, the M2 will be a slightly faster version of the M1 chip that came out in late 2020.”

More specifically, the number of CPU cores is the same as M1, with 4 high-performance cores + 4 high-efficiency cores. On the other hand, the number of GPU cores will be 9 to 10, which is a little stronger than M1 (7 to 8). In conclusion, the idea that the performance improvement from M1 to M2 is “the same as the evolution that Apple makes on the iPhone every year” is stated.

This is also a reconfirmation of the prediction that Mr. Gurman mentioned earlier, but it seems to be highly credible because the prediction of the MacBook Pro (2021), which was not released at that time, was correct.

The next MacBook Air equipped with M2 is expected to be released in the middle of 2022. Apple’s strategy may be to launch various high-end Macs in the first half of this year to regain professional users, and in the second half, expand the Mac user population with a new Air that has moderate performance, excellent power saving, and is inexpensive. Maybe.
