Australian Prime Minister: Djokovic can re-enter the country for good reasons

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that world No. 1 in men’s tennis, Novak Djokovic (35, Serbia), was deported for not being vaccinated against COVID-19, and that he may be allowed to enter the country if there is a valid reason, even during the three-year re-entry ban. .

Prime Minister Morrison said in an interview with Australian media on the 17th local time that Djokovic would be banned from entering Australia for three years due to his visa revocation, but even before that, “if there is a good reason, a re-entry opportunity may be considered.”

The day before, Djokovic was deported after a federal court dismissed a lawsuit he filed against the Australian government’s decision to revoke his entry visa for not being vaccinated.

Under Australian immigration law, if you are deported due to visa revocation, you will be barred from entering Australia for 3 years in principle, unless there is a good reason.

When asked if Djokovic’s vaccination would make a difference, Prime Minister Morrison said, “There is no precondition at the time of review that would nullify the[Immigration]Minister’s various decision-making powers.” I did.

Interior Minister Karen Andrews, who oversees the Department of Immigration, said, “If Djokovic has a compelling reason for re-entry, it will be considered.”

Djokovic arrived in Australia on the 5th to compete at the Australian Open, but the Australian government canceled his entry visa the next day because he had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Dissatisfied with this, Djokovic filed a lawsuit against the Australian government and won on the 10th that there was a legal flaw in the visa cancellation procedure, raising speculation that he would be able to participate in the Australian Open.

However, on the 14th, the Australian government canceled his entry visa, ex officio by the Minister of Immigration, and the lawsuit filed against him was dismissed, and Djokovic was deported from Australia on the 16th.
