There have been reports of two women diagnosed with sarcoidosis after undergoing semi-permanent eyebrow surgery. [사진=메디컬케이스 리포트 저널]There have been reports of two women diagnosed with sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease, after receiving semi-permanent eyebrow surgery. Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by non-necrotic inflammatory tissue. This is the first time a case of illness has been reported after receiving semi-permanent cosmetic procedures.

The University Medical Center of Ljubljana, Slovenia, recently published an article in the Journal of Medical Case Report entitled “Microblading reaction as a manifestation of systemic sarcoidosis: two case reports and a literature review,” which reported the onset of sarcoidosis a case of sarcoidosis was reported in two women. Both people were 33 years old and went to hospital with symptoms of orange and red plaques around their eyebrows.

The first woman underwent semi-permanent eyebrow surgery (microblading) and a year later a skin lesion appeared in the eyebrow area. According to the medical staff, there were no external factors that could cause sarcoidosis and there was no family history. The second woman underwent the same procedure for six consecutive years before the skin lesions and symptoms appeared three months ago. Similarly, skin lesions appeared only around the eyebrows and no specific external factors were found that could cause sarcoidosis.

A skin biopsy of the affected area revealed that both women had been diagnosed with sarcoidosis, and chest x-rays and scans showed involvement of the lungs and lymph nodes. Medical staff believe both patients developed sarcoidosis as a result of the microblading. Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a knife-shaped tool with several small needles to finely scrape the surface of the skin and apply pigment to the epidermal layer.

Systemic inflammatory disease of unknown cause… It can also affect organs such as the brain and heart.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown cause. It is characterized by a non-necrotic granuloma, which is an inflammatory tissue made up of several cells grouped together. Diagnosis is often difficult due to nonspecific or mild clinical symptoms. Although symptoms initially appear on the skin in approximately 20-35% of cases, the lesions are generally similar to other dermatological diseases. Red, raised lesions often appear here and there on the skin. In some cases it is limited to the skin, but in most cases it involves the lungs and lymph nodes. It can also affect other parts of the body, including the brain, heart, and kidneys.

The cause is unclear, but it is currently assumed to occur when certain irritants in the environment cause inflammation in sensitive patients. Treatment varies depending on the symptoms. If there are no symptoms or other problems, only follow-up observation is performed, and if it affects only the eyes, topical steroids may be used. However, if symptoms are present and multiple major areas or organs are involved, systemic steroids are used for treatment.

The first woman underwent steroid treatment for two years and the skin lesions disappeared. The second woman also received steroid treatment and showed similar improvement within the first year of treatment. Medical staff told doctors and cosmetologists who perform the cosmetic procedure: “Although it is rare, patients should be fully informed of these risks before undergoing the procedure.”
