Utah House hopeful Bob Stevenson is challenging incumbent Rep. Trevor Lee ahead of the Davis County Republican Party convention, alleging misconduct in the party’s review of delegate selection for District 16.

Stevenson, a Davis County commissioner and former Layton mayor, filed a complaint with the party claiming two District 16 delegates were removed in response to a last-minute delegate challenge by his opponent, Trevor Lee. He stated the delegates were later reinstated but maintained the incident raises serious concerns about the integrity of the caucus convention system.

“This is absolutely outrageous and another egregious example of a lack of transparency, and not following established bylaws by party officials,” Stevenson said in a statement. “Even if the two delegates were reinstated, the turn of events calls into question ‘the integrity of the caucus convention system….”

The Davis County Republican Party delegates are scheduled to meet Saturday to weigh in on GOP hopefuls seeking various county offices, including the District 16 Utah House seat where Stevenson and Lee are competing. Delegates play a key role in selecting party nominees for office.

A party official responded to Stevenson’s allegations, stating the party has an established process for reviewing delegate selections and that the process was followed in this instance.

Beyond the delegate controversy, Lee faces additional scrutiny from two businessmen who accuse him of abuse of power and altering checks during a prior job. Jason Walton alleges Lee modified multiple checks while working at his Moxie Pest Control company in North Carolina in 2013, increasing paid amounts by at least $3,100. Trent Spafford, owner of Enevive, a Utah County-based company, claims he advanced Lee $93,000 to help with a personal matter, with the understanding Lee would assist Enevive in securing a government contract.
