China Takes “Special” Policy Measures to Improve Access for Taiwanese Companies to Fujian Province

China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has recently announced its plans to implement “special” policy measures aimed at enhancing the access of Taiwanese companies to Fujian province. This move is in line with the broader objective of integrating the province with Taiwan. The NDRC’s intention to promote cooperation between Xiamen City in Fujian Province and Kinmen Island in Taiwan was highlighted by Chuo Liang, the deputy director of the Development and Reform Commission. This collaboration will encompass various aspects such as the expedited development of gas, electricity, and transportation networks.

During a press conference, the Chinese government expressed its support for initiatives that will facilitate easy access to Xiamen’s new airport from Kinmen. Additionally, they encourage new energy cooperation between Ningde, a city north of Xiamen, and Taiwan. Another initiative includes the accelerated establishment of a pilot development zone in Pingtan County, which is the closest county to mainland Taiwan. Moreover, the government is committed to expediting the construction of a high-speed railway connecting China and Taiwan.

On the other hand, Taiwan’s Mainland Committee, responsible for China policy, criticized this “unilateral” plan, labelling it as another attempt to win over the Taiwanese people. They asserted that it would not succeed.

Meanwhile, China is grappling with economic challenges, systemic risks in its financial sector, and a declining business environment. Consequently, the country is making efforts to attract Taiwanese capital and talent in order to revive its domestic economy.

In conclusion, China’s NDRC has unveiled comprehensive measures to facilitate closer economic integration between Taiwan and Fujian province. While Taiwan’s Mainland Committee has raised objections, China remains steadfast in its pursuit of strengthening ties and mitigating economic challenges.
