Cruciferous Vegetables: A Superfood for Lowering Blood Pressure

Cruciferous vegetables are a type of superfood rich in various nutrients and have been found to have a positive effect on lowering blood pressure. These vegetables, known for their four-petaled cross shape, include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Chinese cabbage, radish, and mustard greens.

A recent study conducted by a research team from Edith Cowan University in Australia examined the effect of cruciferous vegetable consumption on blood pressure in 18 adults with mild to moderate hypertension between the ages of 56 and 72. The study, published in the international medical journal “BMC Medicine”, found that eating four servings of cruciferous vegetables per day can lower systolic blood pressure by 2.5 mmHg, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease by approximately 5%.

The study involved two two-week experiments, where participants consumed either four servings of root vegetables and squash per day or four servings of cruciferous vegetables per day. The results showed a significant reduction in serum triglyceride levels and body weight, with the difference in blood pressure change not attributed to weight loss.

The researchers concluded that “Cruciferous vegetables, known as anti-cancer foods, have excellent effects on cardiovascular disease” and that “By increasing the intake of these vegetables, the burden of cardiovascular disease can be significantly reduced.”
