The coldest place in Lahaul

Koksar is a village located in the Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Cox’s Bazar is located on the Leh-Manali Highway. It is also the coldest place in Lahaul. During the winters, the place experiences heavy snowfall. However, with the arrival of tourists in the summer, the PWD rest house and restaurants here become more active.

Cox’s Bazar is located 19 km from Rohtang Pass and 7 km north of the Atal Tunnel Rohtang North Portal. This is a beautiful mountainous area. Many beautiful sights and hiking trails can be seen here.

Cox’s Bazar is the first village after entering Lahaul. Also, Lahauli is the nearest village to the famous Chandra Tal (Moon Lake).

Situated at an elevation of 14100 ft above sea level, Chandrathal Lake is a popular destination for tourists and trekkers alike. The lake got its name because of its crescent shape. Chandrathal Lake was first discovered by traders from Tibet and Ladakh.

Chandrathal Lake is about 2.5 km wide. It is the source of the Chandra River, which later merges with the Bhaga River to form the Chandrabhaga River, which later joins the Chenab.

Chandrathal Lake can be visited only in summer. The lake stays frozen for the rest of the season. Many tourists visit the lake from late May to early October.

The valley where Lake Chandrathal is located is generally a wasteland. There is no entertainment here. But during the summers, the land shines with extraordinary beauty. The sky reflects and the lake turns blue. The lake and the valley bordered by a wide carpet of green grass are a sight to behold. During this time many tourists live here in tents. In addition, there are PWD guest houses and rooms rented by villagers in Kunz, Pass and Battle. There are some dhabas in the battalion, kuns and pas for food. The restaurants at Chandrathal mainly serve Tibetan and Indian food.

According to Hindu mythology, Chandrathal is the place where King Indra got down in his chariot to take Yudhisthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, to heaven in mortal form. Locals believe that fairies visit the lake at night.
