Driver’s license into the smartphone… Issuance of the first ‘mobile ID’ starting today

The era of ‘mobile ID’ is ushering in where you can put your driver’s license that you had to carry in your wallet and carry it on your smartphone.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security and the National Police Agency held a mobile driver’s license opening ceremony at the Driver’s License Examination Center in Western Seoul on the morning of the 27th.

The mobile driver’s license is the first mobile identification card for the general public, and is a driver’s license issued to a personal smartphone in accordance with the Road Traffic Act.

Since it has the same legal effect as the current plastic driver’s license, from today, mobile is available everywhere, including public and financial institutions, rental car and ride-sharing companies, airports, hospitals, convenience stores, liquor stores, passenger terminals, and accommodation facilities. You can use your driver’s license.

The government has been pushing for the introduction of mobile IDs as a key task for digital government innovation as the current plastic ID cards are inconvenient to carry, and problems such as weak durability and exposure of personal information are constantly being raised. Last year, we also issued mobile civil service certificates for public officials.

A mobile driver’s license can provide only the information the other party needs, preventing excessive personal information exposure. When renting a vehicle, only the driver’s qualification information is exposed, and when purchasing cigarettes or alcoholic beverages, only whether the person is an adult is exposed.

For six months from today, mobile driver’s licenses can be issued at the Western Seoul Driver’s License Examination Center, Daejeon Driver’s License Examination Center, and the police station’s civil service office linked to the test center. The government plans to expand the issuance nationwide in July following a pilot period.

To get a mobile driver’s license, you need to download and install the ‘Mobile ID (driver’s license)’ app, and you can choose between obtaining an IC driver’s license or issuing an on-site driver’s license test center.

In order to obtain a mobile driver’s license with an IC driver’s license, you must first replace your current driver’s license with an IC driver’s license. You can apply for an IC driver’s license at the ‘Safe Driving Integrated Civil Application’ website of the Road Traffic Authority (www.safedriving.or.kr) and receive it by visiting the designated driver’s license test center or the civil service office of the police station.

You can get a mobile driver’s license by touching the received IC driver’s license to the back of your smartphone and verifying yourself. If you have replaced or lost your smartphone, you can reissue a mobile driver’s license with an IC driver’s license without revisiting the driver’s license test center or police station. During the trial period, the cost of replacing an IC driver’s license with an IC driver’s license is the same as the replacement cost of a regular driver’s license.

The way to visit the driver’s license test center and get it issued on-site is to photograph the QR code installed at the test center window with the mobile ID app and get it issued, and it’s free during the trial period. However, if you need to reissue a mobile driver’s license due to replacement or loss of your smartphone, you must visit the driver’s license test center again.

To check the authenticity of the mobile ID, you need to check the movement of the background screen and the current time display. Alternatively, after installing the ‘Mobile ID Verification App’, scan the QR code of your mobile driver’s license to check the verified information.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security explained that from today, convenience services using a mobile driver’s license will be provided at Woori Bank, convenience store CU·GS25, rental car Team O2, car-sharing green car, kickboard pookgo, unmanned vending machine Plantinet, and Korea Information Certification.

Starting with the mobile driver’s license, the government plans to continue expanding mobile ID cards to include national merit cards, disability registration cards, youth ID cards, and alien registration cards through consultations with related ministries.
