Future minister defends herself against racist comments

Doreen Denstädt becomes the first black female minister in East Germany. They are already receiving a “large number of racist and insulting comments”.

The police are investigating because of racist and insulting statements on the Internet against Thuringia’s designated Justice and Migration Minister Doreen Denstädt (Greens). An investigation had been initiated. The police will “continue to do so in the case of criminally relevant statements,” she wrote on Twitter. According to the Greens, Denstädt will be the first black female minister in East Germany after she is sworn in, which is scheduled to take place in early February in the state parliament in Erfurt.

The previous police officer was named by the Greens a few days ago as the successor to the dismissed Justice and Migration Minister Dirk Adams (Greens). Since then, according to the police, there have been “a large number of racist and insulting comments on social networks”. The qualification of Denstädt, who is an administrator, is also questioned in the comments.

Denstädt: Insults are nothing new

Denstädt, who previously worked as the chief police officer in the Thuringian police’s trust center, told the news magazine Der Spiegel that insults were nothing new to her. “But I think it’s good that the country is once again seeing what people of different skin color, especially women, face every day.”

The 45-year-old described the question of whether she could do her new job as legitimate. “I counter that: I know how an authority works, on almost all levels. I started as a patrol officer in Erfurt-Nord, have completed my studies, have professional and life experience and am now in a staff position at the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior , the police trust agency,” she said. According to Denstädt, he has been a member of the Greens since 2021.
