G7 summit tomorrow over Afghanistan… Taliban sanctions push

The G7 summit will be held to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, in which the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist militant group, has regained power in 20 years.

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who will chair the G7 this year, posted on Twitter on the 22nd that he would convene an emergency G7 summit on the 24th.

“The international community must work together to ensure safe evacuation, prevent humanitarian crises and safeguard the benefits that Afghans have enjoyed over the past two decades,” Johnson said.

The video conference will be attended by Prime Minister Johnson, US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

Reuters reported that Britain will propose a review of economic sanctions and cessation of aid to the Taliban at the meeting.

U.S. President Joe Biden also said at a White House press conference when asked if he would support British sanctions pressure if the Taliban commit acts of violence, saying “yes” and “depends on their actions”.

“It is essential that the international community work together to support the Afghan people to ensure a safe withdrawal and defend what has been gained over the past two decades,” Johnson said.
