Details of the design event “DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2024”, which will be held for the first time in 12 years at the end of this month, have been released on the official website.
The core of the event, “MAIN EXHIBITION,” will display works by 32 groups from Japan and abroad, including South Korea, Taiwan, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, as well as many new works.
Furthermore, in the “SPECIAL EXHIBITION” curated by internationally active young artist Takuto Ota, Kumi Kaguraoka, an artist who focuses on the interface between human society and the body, will exhibit works that break the image of metal materials. We will hold an exhibition by eight young artists who are expected to be active internationally in the future, including Kazuhiro Toyama, who is exhibiting at the “LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize.”
Throughout the five days of the event, a total of 11 publicly recorded talk programs called “TALKS” will be held with guests from various genres. Taizo Son, one of the world’s leading entrepreneurs who has worked in tech startups, Ikuko Yokoyama, lead curator of M+, Asia’s first global visual culture museum that opened in Hong Kong, and an experimental space in Minami Aoyama We welcomed guests such as Keisuke Nakamura, a core member of “SKWAT”, whose movement to temporarily occupy and liberate idle facilities in cities such as Shibuya PARCO 4F, and others, and discussed the possibilities of design from various angles such as tech, business, and art. We will exchange opinions about sexuality.
Also on stage will be Monica Khemsurov, co-founder of Sight Unseen, director of DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2024, and Max Fraser, editorial director of Dezeen, to deepen the discussion on the current state and potential of design.
In a special space within the venue, a “MARKET” will open for a limited time, where you can purchase one-of-a-kind works and products by exhibiting artists. Books selected by “twelvebooks”, which specializes in art books, are also on display. The venue design was designed by young architect Tomugo Itasaka, and by installing a large non-woven roof over Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall, we create a space where visitors can concentrate on the exhibited works.

▼ SPECIAL EXHIBITION | Imagining Satellites
A special exhibition titled “Imagining Satellites” that shows a new trend. Under the curation of Takuto Ota, eight next-generation artists who transcend genre boundaries will gather to demonstrate diverse possibilities through expression beyond design.
STATEMENT
“Imagining Satellites” examines the depth of the artist/designer’s personal motivations for creating work amidst societal expectations. Curated by Takuto Ota, the diverse works on display in this exhibition are the result of each artist’s solitary journey, and are lined with pieces that demonstrate the importance of self-reflection and the spirit of challenging conventional wisdom. By looking once again at the initial impulse toward the act of creating something, the exhibition questions the necessity of independently launching forms.These works go beyond mere visual expression; It can be said that it is a story of the fragility that accompanies the process of . This is an opportunity for viewers to confront the essence of the act of creating something and witness the pure desire that underpins creation.
