Google officially confirms 64-bit-only ‘Pixel 7’ series smartphones

Google has officially confirmed that the latest flagship smartphones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models only support 64-bit apps.

In the Android Developer Blog, Google said, “The Pixel 7 series will only support Android’s first 64-bit apps.” All Android devices that currently support 64-bit apps also support legacy 32-bit apps.

If only 64-bit apps are supported, RAM usage can be reduced and performance and security can be improved. According to Google, if 32-bit support ends, CPU performance will improve up to 25%, and 150MB of RAM will be available.

Meanwhile, Google changed Play Store policy in 2019 and made 64-bit support mandatory. 32-bit apps that don’t support 64-bit are discontinued. Google is also said to be offering a 64-bit-only OS for tablets for release next year.
