Houthi Group Claims Responsibility for Attack on Cargo Ship in the Red Sea

[ドバイ 12日 ロイター] – The pro-Iranian Houthi group from Yemen announced on the 12th that they had carried out an attack on a cargo ship in the Red Sea.

A Houthi spokesman said the target was the American ship Star Iris. However, according to ship tracking information, the vessel is registered in the Marshall Islands and owned by Greece.

On the morning of the 12th the British maritime security company Ambry and UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced that a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship belonging to Greece had been targeted by two missiles while sailing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

US defense officials said Star Iris was likely to be targeted but missed. Earlier, a report by maritime experts suggested that the vessel may have been damaged but there were no casualties.

The Star Iris was carrying a cargo of corn from Brazil to Iran, according to a ship tracking analysis by data analysis firm Kepler. Shipping sources said it was the first time the Houthis had targeted a ship bound for Iran since they began attacking ships in connection with the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas.

A regional security official said the aim of the attack was to “show that Iran does not control the Houthis and that it is acting independently.” The Houthis said they had notified the Iranian government in advance.
