Turkish Photographer Captures Stunning Time-Lapse of Over 100 Lightning Strikes

Astrophotographer Ugur Ikizler showcases the power and beauty of lightning

In a mesmerizing display of nature’s fury, a Turkish photographer has captured the awe-inspiring sight of over 100 lightning strikes in just 50 minutes. Ugur Ikizler, an esteemed astrophotographer, recently unveiled his time-lapse photography masterpiece, shot in the coastal village of Mudanya in Turkiye (Turkey).

The breathtaking photo, compressed from a total of 50 minutes of footage, showcases a torrential thunderstorm that unleashed a plethora of lightning bolts. With lightning strikes reaching a staggering 30,000 amperes every 30 seconds, this visual spectacle is a testament to the sheer power of nature’s electric forces.

Experts from Spaceweather.com have identified three distinct types of lightning captured in the photo. These include cloud-to-cloud lightning, cloud-to-ground lightning, and cloud-to-water (sea) lightning. The diversity of these lightning bolts adds further intrigue to the already captivating image.

It is worth noting that the capture of numerous lightning bolts during a single thunderstorm is not uncommon. Globally, an astounding 1.4 billion lightning strikes occur each year, equating to approximately 3 million lightning bolts daily or 44 strikes per second.

Ugur Ikizler expressed his thoughts on this remarkable feat, stating, “Each individual lightning strike holds its own beauty, but when amalgamated into a single frame, it evokes a sense of both wonder and terror. This composition truly represents a feast for the eyes, showcasing incredible visual elements.”

As lightning continues to captivate our imagination, Ugur Ikizler’s stunning photography reminds us of nature’s raw power and everlasting beauty.
