Indian Government Proposes Replacing British-Era Criminal Laws for Justice Reform

New Criminal Laws Proposed to Replace British-Era Codes

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has put forward three bills in the Lok Sabha today aiming to reform the existing criminal laws in the country. The Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC), and Indian Evidence Act (IEA), which are remnants of the British colonial era, will be substituted by the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023, Civil Defense Code 2023, and Sashya Bill 2023.

Amit Shah highlighted that this revamp is crucial to ensure justice is served. The current legal framework, including the IPC, was implemented to safeguard and strengthen the British government’s interests rather than ensuring justice. The upcoming laws, on the other hand, are designed to protect the rights of Indian citizens. Shah emphasized that the objective is not punitive but rather to ensure a fair dispensation of justice.
