Israel Condemned: Gaza Military Expansion Sparks International Outrage
Gaza Faces Escalating Malnutrition and Heat as Aid Delivery Stalls
Table of Contents
Gaza is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis, marked by soaring temperatures and a surge in deaths linked too malnutrition, especially among children. While international efforts to increase aid deliveries are underway, meaningful obstacles remain, leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinians vulnerable to starvation and disease.
Dire Conditions Worsen in Gaza
The situation inside Gaza is becoming increasingly desperate. Families are enduring extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). Residents are resorting to makeshift solutions like fanning themselves with cardboard and sleeping outdoors to escape the stifling conditions. Access to basic necessities like clean water is severely limited, forcing some women to collect water before dawn.
“my children cry day and night. My son scratches his body because of the heat,” shared Nida Abu Hamad, a displaced resident sheltering in Gaza City, illustrating the immense suffering faced by families.
Rising Malnutrition Deaths Spark International Concern
The Gaza Health Ministry reports a grim escalation in malnutrition-related deaths. Over the past 24 hours alone, new adult deaths have brought the total to 114 since June. Tragically, 98 children have succumbed to malnutrition-related causes since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 people.
These figures underscore the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict and the restricted access to essential resources. The crisis is so severe that some accuse Israel of deliberately creating conditions of near-starvation. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Israel is “forcing Palestinians into a state of near-starvation to the point that they abandon their land voluntarily,” during a news conference in Egypt.
Aid Delivery Challenges and Disputes Over data
Efforts to alleviate the suffering are hampered by logistical challenges and political disputes. A U.N. system designed to accelerate aid into Gaza is facing criticism, with reports suggesting it isn’t functioning effectively. The system is intended to allow more trucks waiting outside Gaza to enter and safely reach their destinations for distribution, but concerns remain about its implementation.
The total death toll from the war currently stands at 61,300 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. It’s important to note that this figure includes both fighters and civilians, with approximately half of the deceased being women and children. While the U.N. and self-reliant experts consider the ministry the most reliable source for war casualty data, Israel disputes these figures and has not yet provided its own. The malnutrition deaths are separate from this overall toll, highlighting the compounding nature of the crisis.
