Updated June 16, 2025

Meta-owned WhatsApp is introducing new features to its News Tab, opening avenues for monetization and enhanced content discovery. The update includes the potential for advertisements within the States section, paid subscriptions for channels, and the introduction of promoted channels. According⁣ to Meta, these changes are designed to enhance the user experience without impacting core chat functionalities.

Nikila Srinivasan, head of Meta business courier, stated in a virtual ‍meeting that the News Tab, which is used daily by 1.5 billion⁣ people, will host these new functionalities. The goal is to ‍provide a space where users can “discover something new in WhatsApp.”

Promoted channels are designed to help users find relevant content. Srinivasan explained that this feature will “help people discover new channels that could be‍ captivating” and allow administrators to “promote some of their channels…to help attract new followers.”

Channel owners will also have the option to offer payment ⁤subscriptions, enabling them to share exclusive content with their most dedicated followers.

The introduction of ads in States, similar to Instagram Stories, allows channels and companies ⁤to pay for visibility.Srinivasan noted that this will make it easier to “initiate⁤ a conversation in WhatsApp…on a product or service.”
