THE HAGUE, Netherlands – despite ‍Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s⁤ absence from key⁣ meetings, Ukraine remains a central topic at this week’s NATO summit.NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte⁤ emphasized⁢ the ⁤alliance’s commitment to supporting⁣ Ukraine, even ‍as leaders aim to finalize agreements to increase military ‍spending.

Rutte told reporters Monday that⁤ discussions would include “crucial ⁣language about Ukraine,” linking defense spending to the country’s needs through 2035. He stressed the necessity ⁣of Ukraine remaining in⁢ the fight against Russian aggression, calling it ⁤”a ⁣clear commitment by allies.” The NATO summit underscores the ‍importance of continued military aid and financial support for Ukraine.

While Zelenskyy is scheduled to attend a dinner for summit leaders, his presence at the main working meeting Wednesday ⁢remains uncertain. This comes amid ongoing strains in his⁢ relationship with U.S. President‌ Donald Trump, making it tough to secure a prominent ⁣position for the Ukrainian leader at the summit.

Rutte ⁣acknowledged the notable impact of the war on alliance leaders. “Of course, the most⁢ significant and direct threat ⁤facing this ‌alliance remains the Russian Federation,” he said, noting Moscow’s ongoing war against‌ Ukraine with support from North Korea, iran, China, and Belarus. The ongoing conflict ⁣highlights the need for increased defense spending and strategic alignment among NATO members.

The NATO alliance is considerably underwriting Ukraine’s defense.European allies and Canada are ⁣set‌ to provide over 35 ⁢billion euros in additional security⁣ assistance to Ukraine in the coming year, Rutte said. ⁤This marks a ample increase from 20 billion euros pledged just months ago, wich Rutte hailed⁤ as “great ‍news.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air‍ force reported that ‌Moscow launched a massive overnight attack, deploying 352 drones ⁤and decoys, along with 11 ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles. The⁢ assault resulted in at least 14 deaths and numerous injuries, underscoring the ⁣severity of the ⁣ongoing conflict ‌and the urgent need for continued support for Ukraine.

What’s⁢ next

NATO leaders are expected to finalize plans for increased military spending‍ and long-term support for Ukraine, addressing⁤ the threat⁣ posed by Russia and its allies. The summit will likely reinforce the⁢ alliance’s commitment to collective defense and security in the region.
