NHSO Extends Invitation to Pregnant Women for Free Down-Thalassemia Syndrome Screening

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) is pleased to announce that all pregnant women have the opportunity to receive free screening services for Down-Thalassemia Syndrome, ensuring their right to comprehensive medical care. Down syndrome, a genetic disorder resulting from the presence of an additional pair of chromosome 21, leads to developmental delays and potential intellectual impairment in children. It can also cause congenital heart disease and thyroid dysfunction. To identify fetuses at risk of Down syndrome, the NHSO offers screening services free of charge.

Dr. Atthaphon Limpanyalert, Deputy Secretary General of the NHSO, recently confirmed the addition of this service to the existing high-quality antenatal care provided for all pregnant women. To be eligible for free Down syndrome screening, Thai women must be pregnant and have the right to treatment under the National Health Insurance Fund or possess the 30 baht Gold Card.

Conditions and Criteria for Free Down Syndrome Screening

Under the National Health Insurance Fund or with the 30 baht Gold Card, all pregnant Thai women are entitled to this screening service, in addition to other prenatal care benefits. Alongside fetal health checks specific to each stage of pregnancy, services include disease screening, primary vaccinations, mental health assessments, and the provision of iron, folic acid, and iodine supplements.

NHSO initiated the Down syndrome screening service in 2016, and in 2021, expanded its scope from being exclusively available to women aged 35 and above to encompass pregnant women of all ages. Furthermore, the 30 baht gold card system offers additional benefits such as anemia screening and confirmation for pregnant women, as well as their partners, to detect and address the impact of thalassemia disease on the fetus.

To avail themselves of the Down syndrome screening service, pregnant women can present their ID card as follows:

  3. Show documentation relating to other rights, such as social security benefits, civil service entitlements, local government affiliations, or government agency associations.
  4. For individuals with these rights, it is recommended to access the screening at government service units located conveniently close to their homes, such as the Public Health Service Centre, Sub-Regional Health Promotion Hospital, or the nearest Government Hospital.
