Polish Independence Day Marked with Significant Statements

On November 11, Poland celebrated its 106th anniversary of regaining independence after more than a century of partitioned rule by Russia, Germany, and Austro-Hungary.

President Andrzej Duda’s Address

Polish President Andrzej Duda emphasized the importance of U.S. commitment to Europe’s security in the face of Russian aggression. Duda stated that Europe cannot ensure its own security without U.S. protection, highlighting the need to strengthen Euro-Atlantic ties. He also advocated for the restoration of Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders, emphasizing the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of all countries, especially Ukraine[6").

Duda mentioned his recent conversation with Donald Trump and plans to meet before Trump’s inauguration in January. He reiterated that U.S. security guarantees are crucial in times of resurgent Russian imperialism.

Nationalist March and Law and Justice Party

In Warsaw, tens of thousands of people participated in a march organized by nationalist groups. The march, which has seen violent clashes in the past, passed relatively peacefully this year. Organizers estimated the turnout at 250,000, while city hall reported 90,000 participants. Police detained 75 people and seized banned items such as pyrotechnic materials and weapons.

Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, joined the march along with other party members. Kaczyński recently described Poland’s current government as an "occupying power" representing German and Russian interests, calling for the "liberation" of Poland in the upcoming presidential elections[1].

Historical Significance and Current Context

November 11 holds significant weight for Poland, marking the day the country regained its sovereignty at the end of World War I. Today, the anniversary serves as a reminder of the nation’s enduring struggle for independence and its current geopolitical challenges, particularly in relation to Russian actions in Ukraine and the role of U.S. security commitments in ensuring European stability.
