Roman Anthony, Top Prospect, Joins Red Sox Amid Injury Crisis
Updated June 11, 2025
the Boston Red Sox, grappling with a series of injuries, have promoted their top prospect, Roman Anthony, to the major league roster. The 21-year-old outfielder, considered the no. 1 prospect in the Red Sox system and a top prospect in baseball, was added to the roster on monday.
Anthony was slotted fifth in the batting order for monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. While he primarily played center field in the minors, he started in right field for his MLB debut. With Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran holding down center and left field, respectively, Anthony’s versatility allowed him to step into right.
Playing right field at Fenway Park offers Anthony the advantage of avoiding the Green Monster and The Triangle. Before the game, Anthony expressed his comfort with the position. “I’m pleasant,” Anthony told reporters. “I played there in the minor leagues… It doesn’t matter to me…I’m just excited that I’m able to be a part of it.”
Anthony’s call-up comes after a stellar minor league season, highlighted by a 497-foot home run in triple-A. In 2025, he posted a .288/.423/.491 slash line for Worcester, leading the team in several offensive categories despite being the youngest player. Among all Triple-A players, Anthony ranked high in walks, runs scored, on-base percentage, and OPS.
Drafted in the second round in 2022, Anthony quickly ascended through the Red Sox’s minor league system, earning the organization’s Minor League Offensive Player of the Year award in 2023.
the need for Anthony’s presence became more pressing due to injuries to Masataka Yoshida and Wilyer Abreu, who recently joined infielders Alex Bregman and Triston Casas on the injured list. Red Sox manager Alex Cora acknowledged the circumstances but expressed optimism about Anthony’s potential contribution. “We’re excited,” Cora said. “It’s a big day for the organization… We’ll use him the right way.”
Cora also noted Anthony’s maturity, highlighting his understanding of the game and desire to improve. At 21, Anthony is the youngest player to appear in an MLB game this season.
Boston entered Monday’s game with a 32-35 record, trailing the AL East-leading Yankees by 8.5 games. While the Red Sox offense ranks among the league’s best in several categories, their pitching and fielding have struggled.
What’s next
Anthony’s performance will be closely watched as he gets his first taste of major league action. The Red Sox hope he can provide a spark and help address their injury woes as they strive to climb in the AL East standings.
