Review: Sony Pulse Elite Wireless Headset for PS5

Most gamers wear headphones when playing games. It not only allows you to enjoy the game sound in variety and richness, but also is useful for preventing noise between floors.

The journalist uses Razer Barracuda unplug the adapter every time I wanted to play.

So, to purchase a headset specifically for the PS5, I looked at the Sony Pulse 3D Wireless Headset. Meanwhile, I heard that the Pulse Elite wireless headset (hereinafter referred to as the Pulse Elite) would be released.

If I decided to buy a headset, I anxiously waited for the release date because the new product was good. Meanwhile, Sony Korea gave me the opportunity to try it in advance.

– The box hasn’t changed much from the previous version – Sony style by all accounts

The product can connect directly to the PlayStation Portal using PlayStation Link wireless audio technology. The PlayStation Link USB adapter included in the headset package achieves lossless audio transmission up to 48kHz and 16 bit for both uplink and downlink and for connected devices. According to Sony’s internal measurements, the delay rate is approximately 20.8 milliseconds.

The element that helps create a lossless, low-latency audio environment is the “flat magnetic driver”. The flat-type drivers installed in the Pulse Elite are manufactured in the AUDEZE factory located in Orange County, California, USA.

AUDEZE commented: “We specialize in flat magnetic drivers, but since the number of drivers required for the Pulse series was extremely high, it was a big challenge to increase production by around 30 times to meet Sony’s expectations.”

The appearance when I took the product out of the box was very different from that of the Pulse 3D headphones. My first impression was: “It looks like a PS compatible device.” In the case of the Pulse 3D headphones, the headband has a design that appears to slide down over the ear cushions, while the Pulse Elite has a more futuristic design that wraps around the ear cushions.

Just like the Pulse 3D headphones, the left and right sides are symmetrical and there is a built-in microphone on the left side. Like other gaming headphones, it has a structure that allows you to directly extract the microphone. It appears to reflect feedback from the previous version that the sound was muddy due to the distance between the microphone and your mouth. The ending was great, even though I heard it on the Pulse 3D headset. I felt like a lot of effort was put into the design.

Journalists, in fact, are not very sensitive to the quality of the sound and are not able to distinguish it correctly. As long as there’s not enough noise to hurt my ears, I don’t really care. Therefore, when choosing a headset, fit is the top priority.

– The durability of the ear cushions is a bit disappointing – The quality of the microphone would be much better according to users of the previous model.

When I first put on the Pulse Elite, it just felt “light and comfortable”. The word “inconvenience” didn’t come to mind. I expected it to be heavy since a lot of features had been added, but I was surprised that it was much lighter than expected. The ear cushions were made of a soft spongy material, so my ears didn’t hurt at all, and I liked the trick of fitting them to my head without having to specifically adjust the length.

It would have been much more durable if it were made of mesh material, but it was disappointing. The earbuds were designed to be difficult to replace, so you need to be careful when using them. You can replace them with unofficial mesh material ear pads, but I secretly hope Sony switches to mesh materials for their next headphones like other gaming headsets like Logitech and Razer.

I could see why the flat drivers had a superior sound. I didn’t hear much difference compared to the Razer Barracuda. I felt a difference in depth compared to the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones that the reporter uses when he goes out.

Since the WH-1000XM4 is an audio-only device, the various sound ranges are adjusted in real time and the sound is richer than budget headphones dedicated to gaming. Wouldn’t it be more of a problem if the sound quality of a 190,000 won earphone was better than that of a 300,000 won earphone? A journalist who is not sensitive to sound quality can hear it, so those who consider sound quality very important will be able to hear it more.

This isn’t to say that the sound quality of the Pulse Elite is bad. It seems like the sound has been adjusted to not be excessive so you can concentrate on the game. Since it is important to capture various sounds in games, the design can be seen as focusing on clear transmission rather than the beautiful and rich expression of various sound ranges. There is no sound loss or delay, so there is no need to worry.

– The PlayStation Link USB adapter can be purchased separately for 34,800 won – The most satisfying component is the Pulse Elite charging stand

Overall I liked various factors such as comfort, fit and sound quality, but the element that pleased me the most was the included “charging stand”. After using your headphones or gamepad, you often put it on your desk. However, it can fall and sometimes you end up forgetting it in the wrong place and going around looking for it.

To avoid this, I always purchase a stand separately. I also purchased a charging stand for my Dual Sense and am currently storing it. Pulse Elite comes with a charging stand that can be mounted on a wall or on a desk.

The quality is similar to the Dual Sense charging stand that sells for 35,000 won. Considering that the price of the Pulse Elite is 198,000 won, I was really satisfied with it as a cost-effective headphone, even if it disappointed in terms of durability.

Along with the Pulse Elite, an earphone-type device called the Pulse Explorer will also be released. The price is 288,000 won, which is about 100,000 won more than the Pulse Elite, but if you prefer the earbud type rather than headphones, the Pulse Explorer seems like a good option to consider.
