HPV Vaccination and Cervical Cancer Screening Campaign Launched in Ziguinchor
Health officials in Ziguinchor, Senegal, organized a walk on Saturday to raise awareness about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and cervical cancer screening, according to the Agence de Presse Sénégalaise (APS).
Targeted Vaccination for Young Girls
The campaign primarily targets girls aged 9 to 14, who are considered the priority group for HPV vaccination, explained Dr. Papa Amadou Diallo, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the Ziguinchor Health District.
HPV vaccination is a key preventative measure against cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally. The World health Institution (WHO) recommends HPV vaccination as part of a complete cervical cancer control strategy.
Example: The WHO states that approximately 570,000 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed worldwide in 2018,with 311,000 deaths. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/cervical-cancer
