South Africa finds J&J vaccine protects 71% of Delta

South African trial finds J&J vaccine protects against 71% of Delta strains.

South Africa’s Ministry of Health has released the results of the vaccine’s efficacy test. Johnson&Johnson It was found to be 71% effective in preventing hospitalizations and 96% mortality, and may remain effective for up to 8 months.

But it was less effective against the first beta strain found in South Africa was 67% protective because this strain dodges immunity better than the Delta species.

The trial was conducted on nearly 480,000 South African health workers who were at high risk of contracting Covid-19 between Feb and May. This is the world’s first real-world test of vaccine efficacy against Delta strains.

Glenda Gray, one of the research team and chairman of the South African Council for Medical Research (SAMRC), said: “This research shows that a booster shot is not yet necessary.”
