President Trump Revamps AI Policy, Aiming to Bolster American Innovation

In a significant shift, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, rescinding past government policies that he claims hinder American artificial intelligence innovation. The order, titled "Promoting the Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence to Safeguard the American People," seeks to orient AI systems away from ideological bias and social agendas, focusing instead on promoting human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.

Trump’s order doesn’t explicitly call out specific policies but directs a comprehensive review of those enacted under the Biden administration’s AI executive order of 2023, which Trump rescinded on Monday. The review will assess if these policies align with the new directive, with non-compliant actions set to be suspended.

Last year, the Biden administration issued a policy directive mandating federal agencies to ensure their AI tools do not harm the public. Trump’s order now directs the White House to revise and reissue these directives, overhauling how agencies acquire and use AI tools.

The Trump administration contends that Biden’s AI guardrails were "unnecessarily burdensome," stifling private sector innovation and threatening American technological leadership. The new order also calls for the development of a comprehensive AI action plan within 180 days, led by a small group of White House tech and science officials, including a new Special Advisor for AI and Crypto, appointed to venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks.

Trump’s move to repeal Biden’s AI governance policies signals a significant shift in the nation’s approach to AI development, prioritizing competitive innovation over public safeguards. The future of AI in America may now hinge on the outcome of this review and the subsequent action plan set to be unveiled in the coming months.
