Two unvaccinated Pennsylvania residents have died from measles in Lancaster County, marking the first fatalities from the highly contagious virus in the commonwealth in 35 years, according to state health officials. The deaths occurred amid a broader regional resurgence that includes a declared outbreak in Maryland and rising infection numbers across multiple states.

Pennsylvania Health Officials Confirm First Measles Deaths in 35 Years

The two fatal cases were announced on Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, with officials confirming that both individuals were residents of Lancaster County and had not received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen addressed the severity of the situation in a public statement.

My deepest sympathies are with the loved ones who are facing this unimaginable loss. Because measles was largely absent from the Commonwealth for over thirty years, public familiarity with this condition is low and the gravity of the illness is not fully appreciated.

State health data shows that Pennsylvania has recorded nearly 400 cases across 28 counties, with almost half of those infections concentrated in southern Lancaster County. Most of the recorded patients are adults between the ages of 18 and 49. State officials noted that official tallies typically represent an undercount of actual infections.

Regional Outbreaks and Vaccination Rates Across the Mid-Atlantic

The Pennsylvania fatalities were announced just one day after Maryland health officials declared a measles outbreak spanning St. Mary’s, Carroll, and Cecil counties, where 31 confirmed cases have been identified. Meanwhile, New York health authorities urged residents to check their vaccination status following an uptick in cases across rural parts of the state near the capital, as well as in central and western regions.

Medical experts emphasize that measles is among the most contagious viruses known to medicine, killing one to three people for every 1,000 infected and frequently leading to severe complications like pneumonia or brain swelling. Up to 20% of infected individuals require hospitalization. Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani stressed the importance of community protection in a statement.

The overall risk remains low if you are fully vaccinated. We urge Marylanders to unite with us in safeguarding our youngest residents and shielding those most vulnerable to harm. Reviewing your immunization records and receiving the vaccine if you are behind schedule represents the most direct and effective approach to achieve this.

The regional spread coincides with national data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing the largest one-year increase on record in requests for school vaccine exemptions alongside a gradual decline in routine immunization rates. Recent public messaging debates have also intensified, following a press conference held by Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. linking vaccines to autism—a claim repeatedly refuted by extensive scientific research.
