SINGAPORE – Top security officials at the shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore emphasized Sunday that the growing alignment of China and North Korea with Russia in the Ukraine war highlights the necessity for a global defense strategy. The officials warned that regional lines are blurring,‍ demanding a unified international response.

Dovilė Šakalienė, Lithuania’s defense minister, cautioned that a Russian victory in ‍Ukraine could embolden China regarding its territorial claims in Taiwan ‍and the South China Sea. She argued that such an outcome⁤ would signal to smaller nations that borders can ⁤be ignored with impunity.

Šakalienė noted ⁣the shared cybersecurity threats, stating, “when we talk about the main perpetrators in cyber security against Japan it’s China, Russia and North Korea… When ⁢we talk⁣ about main cyber security perpetrators against Lithuania it’s Russia, China and Belarus — two out of the three are absolutely the same.” She stressed the need for ⁢a coordinated response to the increasingly aligned‍ authoritarian axis of ⁤Russia, China, Iran, and⁢ North ‍Korea, particularly concerning cyber security.

Richard Marles, the Australian defense minister, highlighted the strong engagement of European countries in the discussions, reflecting a sense of interconnectedness between the⁣ Indo-Pacific and the North Atlantic regions.

China’s Foreign Ministry responded to comments from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, rejecting claims that ⁢Beijing is destabilizing the region or preparing to seize Taiwan. The ministry asserted that the U.S.is the primary factor undermining peace in the Asia-Pacific and reiterated its stance that Taiwan is an internal Chinese matter.

Gilberto teodoro Jr., the Philippines’ defense‍ secretary,⁣ dismissed the notion that the U.S.was the problem, criticizing China’s⁣ actions in the South China ‍Sea. He stated, “What the Chinese government considers fair and just may ⁤stand in stark contrast to the norms and‍ values accepted⁢ by the rest of the world, especially the smaller countries.” He also emphasized the global ⁣economic impact of disruptions in the South China Sea, a critical maritime route.

Singapore’s Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing said China missed an opportunity to have its voice heard by not sending its own defense minister, ⁣but it was still incumbent upon others to reach⁣ out to Beijing to try and build ⁢bridges‍ and prevent misunderstandings. He stressed the importance of understanding China’s⁣ perspectives and for China to understand how the rest of the ⁤world perceives it, emphasizing that working with China is in everyone’s interest to achieve global defense.

What’s next

The ‍international community is expected to continue discussions on coordinated defense ‍strategies⁣ and diplomatic engagement to address the challenges posed by the evolving geopolitical landscape and the alignment of certain nations.
