In an interview with the Financial Times, Weidel, who leads the federal party and the AfD parliamentary group together with Tino Chrupalla, said a government led by her party would try to reform the European Union and give the member states more sovereignty again. If this does not produce the desired result, she believes there should also be a referendum in Germany on remaining in the EU, as was the case in Great Britain in 2016.
At that time, 52 percent of the Brits who took part voted to leave the EU and 48 percent voted to remain in the EU. Great Britain’s exit was completed in 2020. In Germany, referendums at the federal level are not provided for in the Basic Law, except for the reorganization of federal states.
