CoatueS Laffont: Bitcoin Deserves a Place in Investment Portfolios
Philippe Laffont, founder of Coatue Management, believes bitcoin’s evolving characteristics make it an increasingly attractive asset for investment portfolios. Speaking at Coinbase’s State of Crypto Summit in New York City, Laffont highlighted decreasing volatility and growing institutional acceptance as key factors.
While bitcoin’s price swings once deterred Coatue, Laffont noted that its volatility has diminished over time. He suggested that a shrinking beta, a measure of volatility relative to the market, makes bitcoin more appealing.
The embrace of bitcoin by institutional investors, such as BlackRock’s move to launch bitcoin ETFs, signals a maturing market, Laffont said. He also pointed to bitcoin’s performance relative to the Nasdaq Composite during periods of market uncertainty, such as the aftermath of President donald Trump’s tariff announcements, as evidence of its evolving role.
Laffont observed that the number of bitcoin wallets holding the cryptocurrency for at least a month before selling has considerably decreased, indicating a shift toward long-term investment strategies.
Given bitcoin’s current small share of global net worth, Laffont argued that its potential for growth necessitates a more central role in investment portfolios. Coatue has invested in various crypto-related ventures, including Dune Analytics, Hut 8, and CoreWeave.
Reflecting on his initial hesitation, Laffont admitted to regretting not investing more in bitcoin earlier. He now emphasizes the importance of simple, “obvious” investment ideas, recognizing that bitcoin’s value is sustained by collective belief.
Laffont acknowledged the diverse perspectives among his client base, ranging from hands-off investors to those wary of crypto. However, he believes the risk-averse segment is shrinking as bitcoin gains wider acceptance.
Despite his enthusiasm, Laffont cautioned against over-allocating to bitcoin, advising investors to maintain a manageable position that allows for long-term holding without undue anxiety.
