CDU wants to restrict cell phone use in elementary schools

CDU party deputy Karin Prien sees the increasing media consumption of younger children as a danger. Your party would like to take action against private cell phones in primary schools.

The CDU advocates cell phone restrictions for children in primary schools. It should be noted that increasing media consumption by ever smaller children brings with it considerable dangers, said party vice-president Karin Prien on Monday after meetings of the CDU top committees in Berlin. Private cell phone use should therefore generally be excluded in primary schools.

“We believe that school must be a space in which children can not only learn freely, but in which they can also have sensible social contacts.” And it is not good there if they have access to bullying or videos glorifying violence via platforms, networks and messenger services at a young age. Schools could make concrete rules and also involve parents, explained Prien, who is the Minister of Education in Schleswig-Holstein.

Prizes for performance goals in schools – including in sports

According to a position paper approved by the federal executive board, the CDU is also in favor of better integration between daycare centers and schools, as Prien said. Linguistic and mathematical skills in primary school need to be promoted more. That means more lessons in mathematics and German and mandatory reading times in primary schools.

Better digital education with key digital skills is also necessary. Prien also said that the performance goal belongs in the school as a whole and also in school sports. This is not a contradiction to more equal opportunities.
