French Farmers Protest: Tractors Block Paris Trade Deal
Farmers Protest EU-Mercosur Trade Deal in Paris
Dozens of farmers demonstrated in front of France’s National Assembly on Thursday, driving approximately 100 tractors into Paris to protest the European Union’s plans to advance a free trade deal with five South American nations. The protest was organized by the Rural Coordination union.
French farmers have consistently opposed the trade agreement with Mercosur – comprising Brazil, Argentina, bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay – citing concerns it will negatively impact their livelihoods. They argue the deal will introduce cheaper agricultural products, undercutting French producers.
Protesters say the French government hasn’t adequately opposed the deal.Thursday’s demonstration aimed to increase pressure on officials.
Farmers assembled before the National Assembly, closely monitored by a notable police presence.
José Perez, President of the Rural Coordination in the Lot-et-Garonne, expressed the union’s concerns. Further details regarding his statement were not immediately available.
The proposed EU-Mercosur trade deal has faced ongoing scrutiny and opposition. The Associated Press reported on the complexities surrounding the agreement and the concerns raised by various stakeholders.
