Global AI Revolution: US, UK, and EU Unite with Groundbreaking Framework Treaty
Historic AI Framework Convention Signed by US, UK, and EU
On May 9, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union (EU) made history by signing the Council of Europe’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Framework Convention, the world’s first legally binding international treaty on the use of AI.
The document was drafted over two years by more than 50 countries, including Canada, Israel, Japan, and Australia, demonstrating a global commitment to responsible AI development.
A senior official from the administration of President Joe Biden emphasized the United States’ dedication to ensuring that AI technologies not only advance technologically but also adhere to ethical standards and respect human rights. The U.S. government welcomes the EC’s significant contribution to achieving this goal.
UK Technology Minister Peter Kyle highlighted the treaty’s global impact, stating that it would bring together diverse countries, fostering cooperation and responsible innovation in the AI sector.
The European Council adopted the AI Framework Treaty in May, establishing a legal framework for all stages of AI system development and use. This treaty addresses potential AI risks and promotes responsible innovation, marking a significant milestone in the global governance of AI.
