Editor: Congratulations on the achievements of your team, Coach Valdovinos! How does it feel to see your athletes recognized at the city council meeting?
Coach Valdovinos: Thank you! It was an incredible honor for our team to be recognized by the Hanford Police Chief and the city council. It validates all the hard work and dedication these young athletes have put into their training. Seeing them celebrated in this way is a proud moment for me as a coach.
Editor: Eight young boxers earned championship titles recently. Can you tell us more about these events and the athletes involved?
Coach Valdovinos: Absolutely! Our athletes competed in two major events—the 2024 Southern California International Championship and the 2024 Halloween Rumble. The dedication and skill showed by Aidan Avila, Noel Mejia, Zaiden Hernandez, Leonard Mendoza, Raymond Coronado, Eddie Alvarez, David Vale, and Adrian Arreola were truly inspiring. Each of them embodied the spirit of hard work throughout their matches.
Editor: Chief Huddleston praised the athletes for their resilience and character both in and out of the ring. How do you think boxing influences their personal development?
Coach Valdovinos: Boxing is not just a sport; it’s a life lesson in resilience, discipline, and character. When these young athletes train, they learn to face challenges head-on, whether in matches or in their personal lives. It teaches them the importance of perseverance and how to handle both victories and defeats gracefully.
Editor: You’ve been coaching these athletes for eight years. What keeps you motivated to continue this work?
Coach Valdovinos: My motivation comes from seeing the growth of these young individuals. It’s rewarding to witness their transformation into strong and confident leaders. Mentoring them is as vital as teaching them the sport itself. Knowing that I can have a positive impact on their lives, encouraging them to overcome challenges and strive for excellence, is immensely fulfilling.
Editor: What are your hopes for the future of the boxing program at Hanford PAL?
Coach Valdovinos: I hope to expand our program, providing more opportunities for young athletes in our community. With more resources, we could introduce new training techniques, host workshops, and even participate in more competitive events. I aim to create a nurturing environment where young individuals can thrive, not just in boxing but in all aspects of their lives.
