Hell Divers 2: The Highly Anticipated Lunar New Year Game Release

I believe this year’s Lunar New Year holiday period is quite a busy time for gamers, as various new game releases and tests overlap. Among these, there were some that were really long-awaited and some that were a lot of fun.

▲ Thanks to ‘Steam Next Fest’, many test versions were released.

As for the work that received the most enthusiastic response during this period, we can’t help but mention ‘Hell Divers 2’. This is a new sci-fi shooting game that was released on February 8th, and it deals with the desperate struggle of a special force that goes out into space to spread a controlled democracy. Although it seems like a light work at first glance, it gains so much popularity that the number of concurrent users on Steam quickly exceeded 100,000 just two days after its release.

▲ This record of concurrent users on Steam is the first for a Sony work.

Although it may appear to be a rather ordinary shooting game on the outside, the charm of this work cannot be defined by the word ‘ordinary’ alone. This time, I gave a brief summary of the charm I felt when experiencing ‘Hell Diverse 2’.

In simplicity and clarity
Changing perspective adds ‘power’

‘Helldivers 2’ is a sequel to the co-op shooter title ‘Helldivers’ developed by Arrowhead Game Studio, and depicts the journey of the special forces ‘Helldivers’ who set out to protect the distant future of Super Earth from enemy forces. The player is a citizen who has just joined the army, and faces a difficult battle alone or in a party.

The game mechanics are not much different from the previous game. Before use, in addition to the basic equipment, you select a ‘Stratagem’ which allows you to call up orbital bombardment, air strikes, support weapons, turrets, etc. with a button input. Since the types of enemies you face vary greatly depending on the battle force and difficulty level, it is most important to take them on appropriately.

▲ The basics of choosing a planet and performing a mission are the same.

And when you reach the planet, you have to deal with the enemy forces you face, fulfill the given missions, and escape. There are a variety of basic missions, such as data convoy, base destruction, and defense, and there are additional missions that can be found by exploring the surrounding area, so it doesn’t progress in a straight line.

▲ In addition to basic missions, additional missions can be accomplished through exploration.

If you want to do these missions, you can do them alone, but since ‘co-op’ is the core fun, it’s not recommended. In particular, as the difficulty increases, the number of enemies becomes more difficult to deal with alone, so it is better to share the burden with other players.

▲ It’s pretty easy to do at first, but as the difficulty increases, the enemies become more powerful.

It can be said that the points mentioned above are actually fun elements that have already been shown in the previous work. It can be said that the thrill of four people running around the battlefield and completing a mission in the court of time while enemies are swarming, and the inevitable mistakes that will make you laugh as it is based on powerful weapons. easy for anyone.

▲ You can experience a unique ‘exciting’ gaming experience compared to previous games.

The biggest change in this sequence is the change in perspective from the top view to the back. Although this was initially seen as a bit of a concern, I think it added a punch that wasn’t really present in the previous work. You can feel a greater sense of urgency as you see enemies approaching from the ridge in the distance, and the weapons that flash and create large explosions are stunning. Of course, it also leads to more unexpected mistakes.

In summary, it can be said that while keeping the fun previously introduced, changes have been added that further increase the fun. Since it was originally a work that already provided a unique sense of immersion, I think the basic formula they created is still widely used today.

– First Impressions –
Still plain and simple fun, fix the server

The previous work ‘Hell Divers 2’ also gained a lot of popularity by word of mouth, but this sequel enjoys much more popularity than that. This shows that the direction the developer chose this time to maintain the current fun and change the perspective of the rear view is working well. In this regard, I don’t think there will be much disagreement about the fun provided by the work.

▲ The basics are so good that everyone is still tight, but server instability is a problem that needs to be solved as soon as possible.

One thing that is disappointing is that, although it is such an enjoyable work, the server is quite unstable. Quick pairing often fails, and in severe cases, you may not be able to connect to the server at all. Although the developer continues to fix this, it still seems like there is a long way to go before the server is normalized.

Right now, no one is complaining about the amount of content in the game. I hope that this server instability will be resolved as soon as possible and that it will develop into a work that will stay with gamers for a long time.
