International Voice Contest named after Jo Sumi

The first competition will be held in France in the summer of 2023.
Expectations for new Asian artists such as Korea

An international vocal music competition named after soprano Sumi Jo (pictured) will be launched.

According to the classical music industry on the 27th, Jo told the media that the ‘Sumi Jo International Singing Competition in Castle’ will be launched in France in 2023. In France, a preparatory committee for the establishment of the competition has already been formed and detailed work is underway. As the English name suggests, the first competition will be held in the summer of 2023 in a historic French castle.

There are many international competitions named after famous musicians who have passed away internationally, but there are not many competitions named after the names of existing musicians. Cho expects this competition to be a ‘gateway’ for young and talented young singers from Asia, including Korea, to advance to the world stage. He also participates as a judge and raises the level of the competition. This contest is the fruit of Cho’s long-standing wish to support emerging Asian musicians. “For me, I brought out an important project that I had kept in my drawer for a long time,” Cho added.

Starting with Zagreb, Croatia on the 30th of this month, Cho will perform in three countries: Vienna, Austria (November 19) and Antwerp, Belgium (December 3). This is the first overseas stage in 1 year and 8 months since the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) crisis. In December, he plans to return to Korea to tour the country after releasing a new album he worked with with ‘I Musici’, a famous chamber orchestra in Rome, Italy.
