Introducing Windows Copilot: Improving the AI Experience in Windows 11

Microsoft Introduces Windows Copilot to Improve AI Integration in Windows 11

In an effort to enhance the user experience in Windows 11 and seamlessly integrate artificial intelligence (AI), Microsoft has unveiled “Windows Copilot” in its latest Insider Preview Build. This feature allows users to easily access AI capabilities through the taskbar or by pressing the Win+C shortcut. By utilizing Windows Copilot, users can conveniently ask simple questions or summarize sentences using the chat function powered by Microsoft Bing.

Previously, Windows 11 users had to manually open the Bing search page from Microsoft Edge and select the “conversation” option to activate the chat function. However, with the launch of Windows Copilot, this process has been simplified and made more accessible, with the chat page opening directly upon pressing the “chat” button on the search page.

Windows Copilot, currently in its preview version, primarily focuses on the user interface (UI) experience. To utilize this feature, users need to have Windows 11 build 23493 or later, as well as Edge version 115.0.1901.150 or later. Fortunately, the default installation of Windows 11 Insider Preview dev channel includes Edge version 115. Additionally, a Microsoft account or an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account is required.

Initial impressions of Windows Copilot suggest that it effectively utilizes AI within the Windows interface. The sidebar, which houses the chat function, is unobtrusive and can be easily closed with another call operation. However, users should be aware that “internal recommendations” and “Microsoft advertisements” may be displayed while using this feature.

Future updates are expected to expand Windows Copilot’s capabilities, such as plug-in support. It is worth noting that the “Win” + “C” key combination, previously assigned to custom Microsoft Teams, has been reassigned for Windows Copilot. While this may pose an inconvenience for users who rely on Microsoft Teams for personal use, it aligns with the company’s focus on catering to Microsoft 365 users in work or school settings.

As an IT writer and enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the stable version of Windows 11 that will allow widespread adoption of Windows Copilot. Nevertheless, further validation and testing will take place in the beta channel and Windows 11 Insider Preview of the release preview channel. If you currently use the stable version of Windows 11, it is likely that implementation of Windows Copilot will be postponed until the 23H2 version.

The Microsoft Bing chat function (hereinafter referred to as Bing) can be used to answer simple questions and summarize sentences by responding to AI (artificial intelligence). However, a question entered in the Windows 11 search box opens the Bing search page from Microsoft Edge (hereafter, Edge) and manually selects “conversation” to start the operation. If you enter a question and press the “chat” button on the search page, the chat page will open directly, but it’s a bit complicated.
In Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 2023, Microsoft announced a “Windows Copilot” provision to improve the combination of OS and AI. Now it appears in Windows 11 Insider Preview build 23493 on the Dev channel.
According to the official blog, Windows Copilot is a preview version and a version that focuses on the UI experience. Windows 11 build 23493 or later and Edge version 115.0.1901.150 or later are required. The Windows 11 Insider Preview dev channel installs Edge version 115 by default, so it seems there’s no need to worry about it. However, a Microsoft account or an AAD (Azure Active Directory) account is required.
To invoke Windows Copilot, click the taskbar button or press Win+C. As far as I tried it, I got the impression that it could be completed within Windows Copilot and use AI smartly. The sidebar itself doesn’t feel too intrusive, as it closes with another call operation. According to Microsoft, “internal recommendations” and “Microsoft advertisements” may be displayed.
We’ll have to wait for a future update to expand features like plug-in support, but it’s a good first preview.
One thing to remember is that the “Win” + “C” key is a shortcut assigned to custom Microsoft Teams. Users who use personal Microsoft Teams to connect with family and friends are inconvenient, but although there are a significant number of Microsoft Teams users (work or school) of Microsoft 365 for corporations, on the other hand, Microsoft Teams for personal use is not haven’t heard much about it. This type of opinion probably led to the shortcut key being changed.
As an author, I want to use Windows Copilot as soon as possible even with the stable version of Windows 11. However, after this, the validation continues in the beta channel and Windows 11 Insider Preview of the release preview channel. If you continue to use stable Windows 11, Windows Copilot implementation will probably wait until Windows 11 version 23H2.
