Is Rahul Dravid Stepping Down as India’s Coach After the ODI World Cup?

After ODI World Cup, Team India likely to have new coach

Mumbai:

There are reports suggesting that Team India will have a new coach following the ODI World Cup, set to be held in India later this year. Head coach Rahul Dravid’s contract is expected to expire with the culmination of the World Cup. However, even if the Indian team emerges victorious, it is uncertain whether the former player will continue in his position, as per a report by Inside Sport.

The report states that Dravid has no plans to extend his coaching contract beyond the ODI World Cup. It is believed that the demanding nature of traveling with the Indian cricket team and being away from family responsibilities has led to this decision. Interestingly, in 2021, Sourav Ganguly undertook the role of the Indian coach during his tenure as the BCCI president, after replacing Ravi Shastri. Initially, Dravid was hesitant to take up the leadership position due to family commitments and frequent tours. However, Ganguly intervened and convinced the legendary player to come on board. It seems that Dravid now desires stability in his personal life, which is why he initially had reservations about becoming a coach. “Even if India wins the World Cup, the decision about his continuation will be made,” revealed BCCI sources to Inside Sport.

However, some other BCCI members dispute this argument. They emphasize that there are no ongoing discussions about renewing Dravid’s contract, with the focus currently on the World Cup. Nevertheless, they acknowledge that talks with Dravid will occur prior to the tournament. A senior BCCI official also asserted that there have been no indications from Dravid’s side suggesting he is not interested in continuing as coach. Under Dravid’s guidance, the team has experienced mixed results, taking over from Ravi Shastri after the disappointing T20 World Cup 2021. While securing various series victories at home, the team has faced setbacks abroad, including in the Asia Cup, World T20 2022, and World Test Championship final.

Mumbai: It is said that Team India will have a new coach after the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India this year. Head coach Rahul Dravid’s contract will expire with the World Cup, but even if the Indian team lifts the cup, there is a possibility that the former player will leave the position, according to an Inside Sport report. According to the report, Dravid will not stay for a second stint as coach.

Rahul Dravid will reportedly not renew his coaching contract after the ODI World Cup. It has been suggested that Dravid has to travel a lot with the Indian cricket team and stay away from family matters. Unexpectedly, Sourav Ganguly took over the responsibility of Indian coach from Ravi Shastri in 2021 when Sourav Ganguly was the BCCI president. At first Dravid was reluctant to take the lead citing family issues and frequent tours, but Dada intervened and roped in the legendary player. Dravid wants to settle his life. That’s why he hesitated to become a coach at first. “Even if India wins the World Cup, it will decide whether it should continue to rule,” BCCI sources told Inside Sport.

But some other BCCI centers reject this argument. “There is no talk of renewing the contract at the moment. The focus at the moment is on the World Cup. However, discussions with Dravid will take place before the World Cup. A senior BCCI member also said that there was no indication from Dravid’s side that he should not continue as coach. The team has had mixed results under Dravid, who took over from Ravi Shastri after losing the T20 World Cup 2021. Despite winning several series at home, the team lost abroad, in the Asia Cup, the World T20 2022 and World Test Championship final.
