Kottayam: A red alert was issued in Kottayam district today (October 16) due to heavy rains. People need to be careful. An area of Mundakkayam city was submerged in heavy rains. The causeway on Mundakkayam-Erumeli road was also flooded. Nearby houses were submerged. The water reached the first floor of the houses. The family escaped by climbing on top of the house. Traffic banned on Mundakkayam-Erumeli road. The cause of the flood was a landslide in Ilamkadu area. There were also small landslides in the forest on the Kodunga side.
The water level in Manimalayam and Meenachilal is rising sharply. Major roads and interstates were flooded. The streams have overflowed and flooded the fields. Those who go on a picnic as part of the pooja holiday are stranded in many places.
Rain until October 18th
The Central Meteorological Department has forecast strong winds in the state till October 18. Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least two places in the last few days.
