Myanmar’s military has reduced the sentence imposed on state adviser Aung San Suu Kyi from four years in prison to two years.

Myanmar state TV reported on the night of the 6th (local time) that the sentences given to Suu Kyi (76) and President Yun Min had been reduced to two years each.

Myanmar Army Supreme Commander Min Aung Hlaing, who leads the military government, said in a statement released on state TV on the same day that the sentences sentenced to the two men would be reduced as a result of a ‘pardon’.

The military explained that his advisor and President Yun Min would serve a sentence under house arrest somewhere in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

Earlier on the morning of the same day, the military sentenced Suu Kyi and President Yun Min to four years in prison each for sedition and violating measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

The military government commuted the sentence less than a day after criticism poured in after the sentence was sent, but it doesn’t really mean much.

Immediately after the coup d’état on February 1st, the military put the shame torture under house arrest and then charged them with more than 10 crimes one after another.

There are still trials on many other charges, and it is speculated that if all charges are admitted, the total sentence for shame torture could exceed 100 years.
