Russia Fails to Secure Membership in United Nations Human Rights Council

On the 10th, the United Nations conducted a vote to determine the composition of the Human Rights Council. This development follows Russia’s attempt to regain its position on the council, only to be defeated in the election and subsequently barred from returning.

In the race for the two Eastern European seats, Albania secured 123 votes, while Bulgaria obtained 160 votes, ultimately winning the election. By contrast, Russia received a mere 83 votes, leaving them unsuccessful in their bid.

Commenting on this outcome, Louis Charbonneau, UN director at Human Rights Watch, emphasized that the result “sends a powerful message to the Russian leadership, highlighting Russia’s unsuitability for council membership, given its extensive record of war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

Meanwhile, high-ranking Russian officials have accused the United States of colluding to exclude Russia from the Human Rights Council. Maria Zaborodskaya, Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, asserted that “the United States launched an unprecedented campaign in support of Albania.” Zaborodskaya’s comments were made in an interview with the state-run Russian News Agency (RIA).

It should be noted that in April of last year, the United Nations General Assembly voted on a resolution to suspend Russia’s membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council as a response to their aggression against Ukraine.
