Samsung Electronics won first place in the global smartphone market in the first quarter with the Galaxy S24 series equipped with artificial intelligence (AI).

Reuters reported on the 14th (local time) that Samsung Electronics regained first place in global smartphone market share as Apple’s iPhone shipments plunged.

According to market research firm IDC, Samsung Electronics was first in the first quarter of this year with smartphone shipments of 60.1 million units and a market share of 20.8%. It comfortably surpassed Apple, which came in second with 50.1 million units shipped and a market share of 17.3%, as well as Xiaomi, which was third with 40.8 million units shipped and a share of the market by 14.1%.

Samsung Electronics managed to regain first place two quarters after losing first place to Apple in the fourth quarter of last year.

It is analyzed that the company has succeeded in increasing sales by leveraging the AI function installed in the Galaxy S24 series.

Roh Tae-moon, president of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience (MX) Division, said in February, “There has been no game-changing innovation of the century as much as AI technology,” and emphasized that “mobile devices are ‘the most important starting point for AI’ to spread AI technology.

On the other hand, Apple’s sales volume appears to have decreased due to the sluggish Chinese market.

In the first quarter of 2024, global smartphone shipments reached 289.4 million units, an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period last year.

IDC said, “The smartphone industry is not completely out of crisis, but it is showing signs of recovery as shipments have continued to increase for three consecutive quarters.”
