The Side Effects of Perfume: How to Apply it Safely and Correctly

Perfume is an attractive object that has a mood-changing effect with its unique scent. However, if you apply perfume the wrong way, the strong scent can reduce your attractiveness and have a negative effect on the human body. Find out what side effects perfume has and how to apply it correctly.

Chemicals present in perfumes can have negative effects on the respiratory tract and skin.
The perfume is produced by combining highly volatile alcohol and various chemicals, and the perfume dissipates together with the alcohol, creating a unique scent. At this time, chemicals such as volatile organic compounds, ethanol, phthalates, parabens, and artificial fragrances in perfumes can become airborne and irritate the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth. In particular, if you are sensitive to these ingredients, you may experience respiratory symptoms such as coughing, runny nose, or sneezing, and if you have asthma or rhinitis, your symptoms may worsen.

Additionally, perfumes often come into direct contact with the skin, and most perfumes have lipophilic components and easily penetrate the skin. However, allergic or inflammatory reactions may occur in some people due to various allergy-causing flavoring agents. There are also ingredients whose use is prohibited due to their serious toxicity. The European Union (EU) has banned the sale of three allergenic flavoring agents (HICC, Atranol and Chloroatranol) since August 2019 and has prohibited their production in cosmetics since August 2021. Since the Ministry for Food and Pharmaceutical Safety has also prohibits the use of these ingredients, most perfumes and cosmetics currently distributed in Korea do not contain these ingredients. However, if you are using or keeping an old perfume produced before this one, we recommend that you check the ingredients of the perfume and stop using it.

Attractive perfume, how to apply it correctly?
When spraying perfume, it is best to spray it on fabrics such as clothing rather than directly on the skin. In particular, you should avoid spraying perfume directly on areas close to your face, such as behind your ears or the back of your neck. This is because perfume can cause rashes or skin problems when it touches your face. Just spray lightly once on the inside of your sleeve, inside your outerwear or behind your tie and you can enjoy the scent without affecting your skin. Furthermore, since perfume has the property of spreading its scent from bottom to top, it is more effective to spray it on the lower part of the body, for example under the knees, rather than on the upper part of the body.

No matter how weak the perfume is, it is not a good idea to spray it multiple times all over your body. The alcohol in perfume can cause symptoms such as dizziness, and if the smell is excessive, it can be perceived by others as a bad odor. This is due to the reaction of the olfactory receptors, and as the scent becomes stronger, there may be changes in the receptors that accept odors in our brain. In fact, there is an internal study that used nematodes to analyze the olfactory processing process depending on the concentration of the substance and found that at low concentrations a preferential response was shown, but at high concentrations it was confirmed that the odor was perceived as negative and avoided. You can create a nice scent by simply spraying it lightly once in the desired location.

Also, when using perfume, it is best to use it outdoors or in a well-ventilated place. This is because when used in a closed room or car, the concentration of chemicals in the air increases and can cause side effects if inhaled through the nose and mouth. When used indoors, it is better to ventilate the perfume, and if there are pets, newborns, pregnant women, etc. who are sensitive to chemicals, it is best to spray the perfume in a separate space.

Meanwhile, how you store perfume is as important as how you apply it. Since perfume is sensitive to ultraviolet rays and temperature, it is best to store it in a cool place, away from direct sunlight. When perfume ingredients oxidize when exposed to ultraviolet rays, they transform into photoallergenic substances, causing phototoxic dermatitis. In some cases, the perfume deteriorates and does not sufficiently emit the original scent. Also, like most cosmetics, it is best to use opened perfume within 1-3 years. This is because there is a risk that microorganisms may proliferate or that the contents may deteriorate after the appropriate period of use has elapsed.
