IGN, a famous game media, announced in an article on January 31 that “Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo plan not to hold the E3 2023 exhibition or not to attend the event at all.” This means that there is a high possibility that all three platform holders of the world’s consoles will fall out.
E3 was called one of the top three game shows in the world along with Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show, and was considered the biggest event among them. It was held at the LA Convention Center in the United States every June, but due to the Corona 19 pandemic, it was held on break or online from 2020, and it was announced that it would return to the offline website this year.
According to reports, the reasons for the refusal of participation by the three companies are different. Nintendo released games expected in the second half of the year earlier than expected, and there aren’t many expected games to showcase at E3. Xbox is known to hold a separate showcase the week before E3, and Sony has not participated in E3 since 2019.
Concern was detected at E3 when self-introductions of platform holders were initiated during the pandemic. Nintendo has long secured influence through live online broadcasting ‘Nintendo Direct’, and Sony and Microsoft have also settled their PlayStation exhibition and Xbox game exhibition online, respectively.
In particular, the news about the absence of Xbox is unexpected compared to other platforms. This is because Microsoft is on the board of the Entertainment Software Association, and has been leading the E3 exhibition more actively while Sony was absent.
Unlike Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show, E3 is open to game media and stakeholders from around the world. Tickets sold to the general audience are limited to a small number. Because of this feature, it is difficult to organize an event that targets pure consumers, and it is interpreted that when each company’s own exhibition was implemented, it took a direct hit.
IGN analyzed, “It’s nice to see the return of the offline E3 event, but it will take time to find the status of the old E3 as the online exhibition settles down and big premiere parties leave. ”
E3 2023 will be held in LA from 13th to 16th June, with an exhibitor exhibition starting on the 11th.
