A 30-year-old American woman, Hope Law, suffered from symptoms such as more than 20 bruises on her thighs and swelling in her knees and hands and feet, which turned out to be adrenal cortical cancer.
According to recent foreign media outlets, Hope visited the hospital several times, but was told that it was simply anxiety disorder. She claims that she visited the hospital more than 20 times a year, but was diagnosed with a minor problem. She explained, “I was originally healthy, but my knees suddenly swelled inexplicably, and so did my hands and feet.” “My blood pressure rose, and there were more than 20 bruises on my thighs, so I thought, ‘This is really not right,’ but the doctors said it was anxiety disorder.”
Even though the exact diagnosis was not confirmed, symptoms such as weight gain and facial rash also appeared. In September 2022, Hope was diagnosed with lupus. Even after taking medication for lupus, the symptoms worsened. In 10 days, her weight suddenly increased by about 4.5 kg, her face seemed to have become swollen, and it became difficult to breathe.
Eventually, he went to the emergency room and discovered that he had a 9.5cm tumor on his adrenal gland. He thought it was lupus, but it turned out to be adrenal carcinoma. Hope later had surgery to remove the tumor at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and received chemotherapy and other treatments.
After about two years of treatment, she was finally declared cured of adrenal cortex cancer. She founded a non-profit organization and is currently working to raise funds for research and raise awareness of cancer. She said, “As a single mother, I had no one to rely on and all I could think about was my children,” and “Fortunately, I was able to have the cancer removed in time, so I think I was miraculously cured.”
What is Adrenal Cortex Cancer?
The adrenal gland is located in a flat triangular shape above the kidney. When a malignant tumor develops in the cortex, it is called adrenal cortex cancer. The adrenal glands are organs that produce various hormones that our body needs. The adrenal glands are largely divided into the cortex and the medulla. The adrenal cortex is an organ that secretes steroid hormones from the outside of the adrenal gland. The cortex secretes hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and glucocorticoids, which help maintain our body’s metabolism and homeostasis.
Symptoms of Adrenal Cortex Cancer
Among the tumors that form in the adrenal gland, those that secrete hormones are called functional, and those that do not are called non-functional. About 40% are non-functional cancers, which do not secrete hormones and have no initial symptoms. The remaining 60% are functional cancers that secrete hormones.
Tumors that develop in the adrenal cortex can cause symptoms such as increased blood pressure, weakened bones, diabetes, excessive growth of the labia and breasts, and gynecomastia. Various symptoms occur depending on hormones. If there is a problem with adrenaline, which lowers and raises blood pressure, symptoms of high blood pressure can occur. If glucocorticoid hormones are excessive, patients experience symptoms similar to Cushing’s syndrome. Edema, sudden weight gain, and a moon-like face appear.
Risk Factors and Treatment
Most adrenal cortex cancers occur sporadically. Some genetic factors can cause adrenal cortex cancer. It is known that high-fat diets, smoking, lack of physical activity, and frequent exposure to carcinogens also increase the risk of cancer. If the tumor size is small, adrenal cortex cancer is less likely to be cancer. If the tumor is larger than 5 cm and changes shape, like the woman in the story, it can be suspected as cancer. If the tumor is removed and confirmed to be cancer cells through a tissue biopsy, chemotherapy or radiation therapy is performed.
Treatment varies depending on the extent of the disease. If the cancer is confined to the adrenal cortex, i.e., the adrenal gland, it can be cured through resection. If the cancer has progressed and has metastasized to surrounding organs such as the lymph nodes, peritoneum, lungs, or bones, systemic treatment such as chemotherapy is necessary rather than partial resection.
